Half an hour later, Wren wasn't so sure she'd made the right choice. She leaned against the metal pole of the subway car, trying to keep from coming into contact with her fellow passengers, all of whom seemed just as worn-down and sweaty as she was, second thoughts and indecision battling it out in her head. The train pulled into the station and jolted to a halt. She started to awareness just in time to slide through the doors before they closed behind her. The train pulled away, leaving her longing for its almost-breathable air. Someone had apparently hit the wrong button on the air filtration system, and they were pumping warm air into this station. Trying not to breathe, Wren climbed the stairs as quickly as exhaustion allowed, moving from one oven to another as she came out onto the street.

At least there was some air circulation up here, even if it was only caused by the traffic moving past on the avenue. She walked the three blocks to the modern high-rise where her partner lived, thankful for the neighborhood watch group that was clearly still watering the trees that lined their street and kept the leaves green. You could almost pretend, looking at green leaves, that the weather was going to break, soon.

Standing in front of the building, she took a deep breath, then started to weave current around her in order to get past the doorman without questions.

"Ah, damn." The current-snakes twitched sluggishly, but there was no surge in response to her pull. She was tapped out, totally. Which explained the dizziness, and how queasy she felt in her gut. Or was that jet lag? She hadn't been good about taking care of herself, lately. No gym time, too hot to even think about it.

"Ma'am?"

She smiled up at the doorman, a tall black man in a spiffy dark blue uniform jacket that was obviously not polyester. "Hi. Um, here to see Sergei? Didier? Apartment 16D."

The guard tapped a key on his desk and looked up at her again.

"Name?"

"Valere. Genevieve Valere."

"Right, Ms. Valere. I'll call up for you."

"Right. Thanks."

He was going to be pissed. He'd probably just gotten to bed. The thought of a sleepy, warm, maybe-naked Sergei made her smile, before more recent events took over her brain again.

"Mr. Didier?" The guard must be new, Wren noted. He pronounced the "r" at the end of Sergei's name. "Yes, there's a young woman… right away, sir." He replaced the phone and looked at Wren. "You can go up, miss."

"Thanks." She just hoped she could get up and walk across the lobby without falling over. Or throwing up. Or any of the other lovely things that sometimes happened when she got this depleted. The urge to pull from the building was overwhelming, but she didn't trust herself to do it delicately enough. Sleep first. Or some coffee.

The chrome-and-wood elevator door opened on the sixteenth floor, and Wren practically fell out into Sergei's arms. "What, no, talking later. Come on, inside.
